In this article, we will outline the general steps for migrating from Exchange 2013 to Exchange 2016.
You can use the process below to do an Exchange 2013 to Exchange 2016:
- First, you need to upgrade all Exchange 2013 servers to Cumulative Update (CU) 10 or later. This is required before you can install Exchange 2016 in your environment.
- Check if you have any Exchange 2010 servers in your environment; these need to either be decommissioned or upgraded to SP3 UR11 or later. Check in detail here – Exchange 2016 system requirements: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719(v=exchg.160).aspx
- If you have any Exchange 2007 in your environment, decommission it. - Check that you meet all the prerequisites to install Exchange 2016 in your environment. You can check here in detail – Exchange 2016 prerequisites: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb691354(v=exchg.160).aspx
- Now, install Exchange 2016 in your environment.
- Then, configure the Service Connection Point on the Exchange 2016 server.
- After that, install the required SSL certificate on the Exchange 2016 server.
- Now need to configure Exchange 2013 – 2016 CAS coexistence. There are different methods to do this. We’ll talk about them briefly, and then I’ll demonstrate one of them.
- Now move mailboxes to Exchange 2016.
- After that, move the public folder mailboxes to Exchange 2016.
- Then migrate the mail flow to Exchange 2016.
- In the last decommission, the Exchange 2013 server.
